Camping at Valley of Fire

Since Facebook is a thing of the past for us, now, I've decided to start posting here at the Gillespies6 again. I may or may not have experienced some pressure from grandparents to do so ;) .

So, the first thing I'd like to share is our latest camping trip. It was unique in a few ways - 1. it was our first time using our new (to us) tent trailer, 2. Grandma Vickie and Crappa Dennis camped with us, and 3. it was the first time I've ever worried that we would literally blow away, with wind gusts up to 35 mph! Yikes! But we survived and had a good time.

Gillespie Update

Hello everyone!

It is finally time for a Gillespie update! We are officially Las Vegans, as we have closed escrow on a home here in the city! We are very excited about this new chapter in our lives. It is going to be quite different, since we've never lived in a big city, but we are already enjoying it!

We have been living here in Vegas with Travis's parents since July while we searched for a home. Travis has begun working at a local hospital on an Intermediate Care Floor, which is considered critical care, but for patients who aren't quite sick enough to be in ICU. He aspires to be trained for ICU sometime in the future, but there are lots of opportunities even on this floor to learn new things. His new floor deals a lot more with brain issues, so that is a change from his last job. I expect to be learning a lot about stroke patients as he gains more experience here! Travis has also been practicing his guitar a lot lately and is doing very well. And he also has been using the Pimsleur program to learn Spanish during his drive to work. It has already paid off since he has had 3 patients in his 1st three weeks at this hospital that did not speak any English!

We are eagerly awaiting the arrival of our little girl, Natalie, whom we expect to make her entrance in to the world around the end of October. I over-heard Morgan telling one of his friends, "My little sister's name is Natalie!" For some reason, it caught me off-guard - it's amazing how well he understands that there is a baby coming soon! One of the big benefits of living in Las Vegas is being closer to midwife care (there were no midwives in Kingman or the surrounding areas). It's so nice not to have to drive 2 hours for prenatal appointments like we did with the last 2 pregnancies. This pregnancy has been great, with no complications or worries, and we are so thankful for that! I'm also loving the fact that Las Vegas's library system is so much bigger - I've been delighted to find many more titles of interest that were not available in our small town. Oh, and the farmer's markets! Once we get settled, I hope to make them a a part of our regular shopping routine.

Malachi is 4 1/2 going on 20. He is a typical oldest child - bossy and always ready to "help" take care of his brothers! This can be very helpful at times, but it can also get out-of-hand. So, we are working on finding a balance. He just learned to tie his shoes with help from Dad and Poppy Marty, which was a big milestone. He has a fantastic memory (something I've come to learn characterizes most kids his age) and loves learning Bible verses, poems, songs and catechism questions. We spend a little time on this every day, and that is the extent of any formal teaching we do. So, his life is mostly packed with free play, running around like a mad man with his brothers, burning off all his little boy energy. He loves to play Spiderman! And lots of reading together, too!

Morgan is 2, and will be turning 3 in December. He loves to sing and play his pretend guitar (a plastic spatula), and his favorite poem is "The Owl and the Pussycat" (owls are, coincidently, his favorite animal). He has memorized everything his big brother has learned, though he's a bit harder to understand! He is such a cuddlebug and quite the charmer. He is not afraid to try new things (except when it comes to food) and is quite a bit more adventurous than his big brother! Both big boys really enjoyed swimming this summer and made lots of progress in their swimming skills.

Little Asher is growing so fast and is already almost 16 months-old. He was an early walker, taking his first steps at 10 months. He is a busy little guy and he loves being outside. His vocabulary currently consists of "Mama," "Dad," "dog," and "more" (which he uses to indicate when he's hungry or thirsty). His favorite things are birds, airplanes, dogs and books. His name means "happy" and he fits the name so well that we've decided that our next child's name should mean "compliant" :o). Asher's big brothers are immensely proud of him and they all love to play together, though he does get run-over by the big boys from time to time. He's a champ, though, and brushes it off pretty well!

Well, I'm sure I'm forgetting something important, but that's all I have for now. We'd love to hear how all of you are doing! Drop a line sometime! Also, we will have a guest room in our new house, so if you need to get away for a vacation, Vegas is one of the cheapest places to fly into - you'll have a place to stay!

With lots of love,

Travis, Betsy, Malachi, Morgan, Asher, and Natalie

Asher's Birth Story

Asher’s Birth Story

It was June 30, one day before my estimated due date. I had done my best to not think about the “estimated due date” since I had learned that they are just that – estimated. My first baby came 9 days “early” and my second came 2 weeks “late”. So I had been telling people that this baby was due “in July” - being purposely vague.

So, back to June 30, I was talking to my brother and I jokingly said, “So, my first baby was early, my second was late. Maybe this one will be right on time!”

That night, around 11:00, my water broke, a new experience for me since my water hadn’t broke with my last two until transition. I woke Travis and we called my midwife, who lives in Vegas. We wanted to give her plenty of heads up so she could make it in time! Since my contractions were still pretty irregular, she told me to get some rest and call when they were closer together.

After an hour or so, we were too restless to sleep so we got up and called everyone. My Grandma Vickie happened to be spending the night that night, so we only had to call my mom, Travis’s parents, and Grandma Pat to let them know they should plan on coming up soon. I was doing my best to relax during my contractions, rocking back and forth on my exercise ball.

Marty and Sheila (Travis’s parents) were the first to arrive, and then around 4, my midwife came in. By that time, labor was getting more intense. They got to setting up the birth tub right away. It was a huge inflatable tub with perfectly placed handle bars. I was ready to get into the tub, but my midwife wanted me to wait until I was in active labor. The contractions were coming strong and close and I thought surely I was ready! When she checked dilation, however, I was only at a 4! She calmly told me not to worry – she had dealt with a similar situation before. She could tell by looking at my belly that the baby was sticking way out and may not be positioned well to put adequate pressure on the cervix to encourage dilation. So we took my maternity belt which I normally wore underneath my bulging belly to help support it, and wrapped it right over the biggest part of my abdomen, to push the baby into a better position. Then she had me sit slightly reclined in my comfy chair.

This position was completely counter-intuitive for me. It was not comfortable, but I trusted that she knew what she was talking about. And, as time proved, she did! The contractions immediately got more intense and more productive. Within an hour, I knew I was ready to get in the tub – she didn’t even have to check dilation! Again, she suggested I recline in the tub, though I wanted to get on all fours. I was so ready to get the baby out, I took her word that this position would help me progress more quickly.

By this time, everyone was at our home – my mom and Grandma Vickie, Travis’s parents, and his Grandma Pat and Aunt Liz. Also, Malachi and Morgan were home. I was not opposed to them being in the room during the birth, however, I assumed they would not want to be. We had enough people around that I knew someone would be able to take care of them if they wanted to leave the room. When my labor began to get intense, I intuitively began to moan with the contractions – it helped me to relax and to keep my jaw loose (when your jaw is loose, it’s easier to relax the rest of your body!). This noise made the boys a little concerned, but everyone else was so relaxed and handled it so well. They assumed that if no one else was worried, they didn’t need to be. When Malachi asked if I was OK, they told him, “Mama’s just working really hard to get the baby out!”

After being in the tub only a short time, I knew that the moment of truth had finally arrived. You see, you can often tell that the birth of the baby is eminent based on the emotions of the mother. When she begins to believe she can’t do it any more and wants to give up, the end is usually in sight! So, as I began to feel overwhelmed, and as I thought to myself that maybe an epidural really wouldn’t be such a bad thing (by  this time, if I was in a hospital, it would be too late for one anyway. Even if it wasn’t I know myself well enough to know I wouldn’t let anyone near me with a needle!) I immediately knew that soon, I’d be holding my baby boy. I remember looking over at my cozy bed thinking that in a short time, I’d be lying there with a new little person I’d never seen before, but whom I already knew in a very incredible way.

I asked my midwife if I should push, and she just told me that my body would let me know when it was time. At my last homebirth, I received a bit more coaching from my midwife during this phase of labor, which I think I needed. But I am thankful that this time I was encouraged to respond to my body’s prompting. It’s an incredible feeling to have the confidence that God has created your body to accomplish such a task with little outside direction.

I felt a low groan coming from my throat, and I knew it was time. Uncontrollable urges to push flooded my body. Travis got in a position to catch the baby. As Asher’s head emerged, Malachi asked it he could touch it! Grammy Jamie lifted him over the edge of the pool to touch the soft head - to this day he hasn’t stopped rubbing that baby’s head! One more push and I was holding my sweet little Asher in my arms.

Nine months of pregnancy, ten hours of labor, one precious life. He is worth every moment.

Malachi Catches His 1st Lizard

I walked outside to find Nora and Malachi hot on the chase. With the help of such a fine huntin' dog, Malachi made his 1st lizard catch! I'm a proud Mama!

Camping in Great Basin

Travis and Malachi went camping in Great Basin National Park with Jonh, Trent, Uncle Dan, Bubba, Trevor and Taylar. Great Basin is the least visited National Park!

I was reminded by someone that our tax dollars are paying for these beautiful parks - we should take advantage of them! Travis said it was worth the 7 hr. drive and he would definitely go back. I hope to go with him, next time!
